Athenis erant X. viri, quibus cura psaltriarum ac tibicinum (alii addunt et viarum) incumbebat, de quibus Plato de Republ. l. 6. Hesych. Α᾿ςτύναμος, ὁ διοικῶν κατα τὸ ἄςτυ. Eorum decem fuisse, legitur apud Aristotelem de Republ. Athen. citante Harpocratione: Δέκα φησὶν εἶαι τοὺς Α᾿ςτυνόμους Α᾿ριςτοτέλης εν τῇ Α᾿θηναίων πολιτείᾳ, πέντε μὲο εν Πειραιεῖ, πέντ δ᾿ εν ἄςτει. Sed numerus est corruptus: Quindecim enim illorum fuêre, quot et Agoranomi, Metronomi, Sitophylaces; nempe decem in Urbe, at vero quinque in Piraeeo: atque hunc numerum semper esse reponendum vult Petitus. Emendationis causam inde petit, quod Piraeeum tertiam Athenarum partem constituebat, ergo quinque tantum erant in Piraeeo, in reliqua vero Urbe iuxta hanc analogiam, decem. Iterum vero munere hôc fungi non licebat, ex Lege: Α῎ν τις ἀςυνομήσῃ δὶς, Si quis semel atque iterum Astynomus fuerit. Ut colligere est e Demosthene in Prooem. 64.
